Buyer's guide
Lester vs. Menards pole barns: what you actually get
One is an engineered building put up by a dealer crew. The other is a materials list you build yourself. Here is the difference, line by line, with sources.
Menards sells a suggested materials list with code-exempt plans; you build it, and site-specific engineering costs extra. A Lester building is engineered for your site's snow and wind loads, framed on factory nail-laminated columns set on precast footings, sheathed in steel up to 26-gauge, and built by an authorized dealer. Mich Barn builds Lester buildings with 26-gauge steel as standard. Menards' standard panel is 29-gauge. Lester costs more up front; the difference buys engineering, heavier framing and a structural design warranty that runs for the owner's lifetime.
Mich Barn Inc. is an authorized Lester Building Systems dealer and builder. We benefit when you choose Lester. Every Menards fact below is quoted from menards.com and every Lester fact from lesterbuildings.com, both checked in October 2026 — the sources are listed at the bottom so you can check them yourself.

Why we build with 26-gauge steel
Steel gauge runs backwards: the smaller the number, the thicker the panel. Menards lists its standard 29-gauge Pro-Rib at 0.0142 inch minimum before painting and its 28-gauge Premium at 0.0157 inch. Twenty-six gauge panels run roughly 0.018 to 0.022 inch. Thicker steel resists denting from hail, ladders and equipment, holds fasteners better, and spans purlins with less flex under a Michigan snow load.
Most post-frame suppliers, by Lester's own description, use 29-gauge. Lester offers 26-gauge in the same 80,000 PSI tensile strength as its 28-gauge Uni-Rib panel, and that is what Mich Barn puts on its buildings as standard.
Columns and footings: the part you can't see later
A post-frame building stands on its columns. Lester's are nail-laminated at the factory from multiple treated plies, finger-jointed at the splices so no single board carries the whole length, and engineered for the loads at that position in that building. They sit on precast concrete footings with anchor blocks fastened to the column at the factory, below Michigan's 42-inch frost line. Once the walls are closed in, none of this can be upgraded.
The warranty, read carefully
Lester lists its structural design warranty as lifetime for an individual owner and 50 years when the owner is a business, church or other organization. Treated lumber carries 50 years; painted steel 35 to 40 years depending on the paint system; workmanship one year. Two conditions matter: the building has to be built to Lester's construction drawings, and wind and snow must not exceed the loads it was designed for — which is exactly why each building is engineered for its own county. The full warranty document is available from us, and you should read it before you sign.
To be fair to Menards: its Premium Pro-Rib panel carries a limited lifetime paint warranty, which on paper is longer than Lester's steel finish warranty. Where Menards does not compete is the structure — there is no building-level warranty behind a materials list, because no one but you is responsible for how it was put together.
When Menards is the right call
If you have an experienced crew, the equipment, the time, and a small building where engineering and long-term warranty matter less — a modest storage shed on your own land, say — a Menards material list can save real money. We would rather tell you that at the site visit than sell you more building than you need. For a garage you will heat, a horse barn, a shop with a lift, an arena or anything carrying a mortgage, the engineering and the warranty are the point.

Lester vs. Menards — common questions
Is a Lester building better than a Menards pole barn?
They are different products. Menards sells a suggested materials list with code-exempt plans that you or your crew build; additional engineering is available for an extra fee. A Lester building is engineered for its specific site's snow and wind loads, uses factory nail-laminated columns and precast footings, and is built by an authorized dealer such as Mich Barn. Lester costs more. Whether it is worth it depends on the building's size, use, and how long you plan to own it.
What gauge steel does Mich Barn use?
Mich Barn builds with 26-gauge Lester steel as standard. Lester offers 26-gauge in the same tensile strength as its 28-gauge Uni-Rib panel. Menards' standard Pro-Rib panel is 29-gauge (0.0142 inch minimum before painting), with a 28-gauge Premium Pro-Rib option.
What is the Lester structural warranty?
Lester lists its structural design warranty as lifetime for individual owners and 50 years for owners that are not a natural person, such as a business or church. Lester also lists 50 years on treated lumber and 35 to 40 years on painted steel depending on the paint system. Coverage depends on the building being built to Lester's construction drawings and on wind and snow not exceeding the loads the building was designed for. Review the full warranty document with your dealer.
Does Menards build the pole barn for you?
No. Menards describes its post-frame listings as 'not a kit, but suggested materials to build this project' and sells the materials at cash-and-carry prices, with delivery extra. You supply the crew, or hire one.
Are Lester columns laminated?
Yes. Lester walls are built primarily with nail-laminated treated columns — a minimum of three plies of 2x4, commonly up to five-ply 2x12 — finger-jointed at the splices and engineered column by column. Menards' smaller post-frame listings use solid 4x6 treated posts; some of its larger listings use 3-ply laminated posts.
Is Menards cheaper than Lester?
On sticker price, almost always — a Menards listing is materials only, before labor, equipment, engineering and delivery. Compare a Menards total with your crew's labor and any engineering fees added against a Lester quote that includes construction, and the gap narrows. We will price both honestly at a site visit.
